Embrace the festive spirit with your clients

The back of a postcard, handwritten to say

I love sending festive messages – it’s a great excuse to reconnect with friends, clients and contacts. This time of year offers unique opportunities to show appreciation, build relationships, and adapt to the changing ways we celebrate. And, in being deliberate about how we do this, we can celebrate with a touch of grace and a lot of heart. Here are some ideas:

Postcards with Heart

Sending thoughtful postcards never goes out of style. They show you’ve taken the time to appreciate your clients and express genuine gratitude. Personalise the message to reflect your client’s values and interests. I still get printed cards from the people that did my double glazing and the estate agent that sold me my house. I can’t say they move me, but a postcard from a former boss really touched me last year.

Digital festivities

Celebrations have come a long way. Thanks to digital platforms, we can connect no matter where we are. Host virtual holiday parties with fun activities like online games, festive webinars, or even a virtual cooking class. It’s all about inclusion and making sure everyone can join in the fun. Yes, we might have had our fill of these in the dark days of December 2020 and 2021, but a thoughtfully planned session with far flung former colleagues or people with a shared interest (perhaps posting some small gifts reflecting the theme of the party) can mean a lot.

Low/No-alcohol gatherings

I haven’t called it a gathering since I was 15! Most 2024 parties will be in the diary by now, but in planning your next one, pay attention to the alternatives that don’t need to revolve around drinks. Try hosting events centred on activities and experiences instead. Think creative workshops, bowling, quizzes, an escape room. This way, everyone feels comfy and can enjoy the festivities.

Respect diverse opinions

This time of year means different things to different people. It’s super important to respect diverse opinions and traditions. Not everyone celebrates Christmas, and some might find this time challenging. Inclusive greetings and acknowledging various festivals can help make everyone feel welcome. Maybe you’re having a “winter party” to thank your team for their help this year. Or, if you’re one of the industries that it at it’s busiest in December, planning something in the dark days of January or February can create more space to enjoy it.

Flexibility is key

Being flexible is crucial. Tailor your communication and engagement style to fit each client’s preferences and circumstances. Sometimes a formal approach works best, while other times a casual, friendly chat is the way to go. Meeting clients where they are strengthens your relationship.

Thinking of those facing tough times

While the festive season is joyful for many, it can be a tough time for others. Show empathy and support to those who might be facing challenges. A simple check-in or a supportive message can make a big difference and show you care beyond business.
